EVIDENCE ON DOULAS
RESOURCES BELOW:

Research shows significant benefits in at least two areas listed below when the laboring person had continuous support of a doula– someone who was NOT a staff member and NOT part of their social network. Overall, research found those with continuous support had:

  • 25% decrease in the risk of Cesarean, largest effect seen with a doula (39% decrease)*
  • 8% increase in likelihood of spontaneous vaginal birth, largest effect seen with doula (15% increase)*
  • 10% decreased use of meds for pain
  • Shorter labor by 41 min avg
  • 38% decrease in baby’s risk of low Apgar score
  • 31% decrease in risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience. (http://www.evidencebasedbirth.com)
